Study links lack of sleep to increased drug use among teens

Teens who sleep fewer than seven hours per night are more likely to use illegal drugs, according to a study released Sunday.

The research also found a link between a lack of sleep and the likelihood of illegal drug use, which can spread through teens’ network “like a contagion,” infecting siblings, friends and acquaintances as many as four degrees’ separation removed.

Researchers at the University of California San Diego and Harvard University mapped the sleep patterns and drug use of more than 8,000 teens for the study.

“Adolescents are embedded in complex social networks and are especially vulnerable to peer effects — possibly not only with respect to drugs, but also with respect to sleep,” said the study, which was presented at the annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

The researchers found that a teen with one friend who sleeps fewer than seven hours is 11 percent more likely to sleep fewer than seven hours.

Teens with a friend who uses marijuana — the most popular drug among US adolescents — are more than twice as likely to use pot themselves.

The researchers also said that teens with a friend who sleeps less than seven hours per night are 19 percent more likely to use marijuana.

The study said the spread of poor sleep habits from one teen to another was partly to blame for an increased likelihood of drug use.

The research also suggested that a lack of sleep in induces teens to try alcohol, and said that increasing the number of hours a teen sleeps each night might help reduce substance abuse among adolescents.

Healthy Older Adults Require Less Sleep

Posted by mpfenning on Thursday, 4 February, 2010

Healthy older adults require less sleep and are less likely to feel tired during the day than younger adults, according to a new study.

British researchers looked at 110 healthy adults with no sleep disorders or complaints and found that adults ages 66 to 83 slept about 20 minutes less per night than middle-aged adults ages 40 to 55, who slept 23 minutes less than young adults ages 20 to 30, Agence France Presse reported.

The older adults also woke up more often during the night and spent more time awake after initial sleep onset, the study found.

Even though older adults spent less time asleep and slept less deeply, they were less likely to need a nap during the day than younger adults, said the University of Surrey researchers, AFP reported.

The study appears in the journal Sleep.

Lack of Sleep May Play a Role in Alzheimer’s

A new animal study suggests that lack of sleep may be linked to the development of Alzheimer’s disease, researchers say. Scientists in St. Louis found that levels of amyloid beta protein levels rose in mice while they were awake, and fell as they slept. And mice who were kept from sleeping had significantly higher levels of the brain plaque than those who slept normally. This protein build-up is linked to the development of dementia, researchers believe.
